Paul Strand - I love this shot. The shadows are terrific. His photography has the feel of someone observing life from afar in a very quiet way. Paul Strand photographed a variety of subjects over six decades. What I love most are his city scenes and portraits. He really captures the spirit of his subjects.
I don't take portraits but his work may change my mind.

Vivian Maier - Vivian's work was recently discovered. I have fallen in love with her work. I hope to someday to take street photography like this. It is hard to believe that her work hasn't been in the public eye until now. Her work was discovered at an auction, which included 100,000 images. I can't get enough of her photos.

Minor White - I discovered Minor White's work in college, so that is a bit ago. I love his eye for the simple and elegant. I really like his landscapes, they are very quiet and I almost feel like I am there with the photographer.

Gorse Mill Studio Visit

Yesterday, I took a drive over to Gorse Mill Studios to help my friend and fellow Boston Handmader, Karen Mahoney, City by the Sea Ceramics, with photographing her work. It was fun experimenting with a light room, lights, pottery and our cameras.

Later, Karen gave me a tour of the studios and building. Above, is an art display of all the studio artists. It is a great way to greet visitors to the studios. I had not heard of the studios before so, this was such a nice surprise taking a tour of the building and space. I never knew this was in Needham.

There is a wide variety of artists in the building from potters like Karen Mahoney to photographers, painters, graphic designers and more... The Mill has a beautiful gallery space to show off artists work. The building also houses The Potters Shop and School along with Simple Syrup Glass Studio.

Artichokes: By Susan Whitlock

Vases: Susan Goldman

Mixed media and Encaustic: Karen Krieger.  Luckily, I was able to meet Karen in her studio. I really enjoyed her work. The windows and light of her studio is wonderful. I am a bit jealous. We had a fun discussion on the difficulty of photographing artwork.

Pitcher: Karen Mahoney, One of our experiments with photographing Karen's work. Karen has had trouble capturing this color and having it look good. It is such a rich and wonderful color. I think we got it.

It will be fun to to meet the artists of Gorse Mill Studios at Needham Open Studios in May

Still Frozen, Jamaica Pond

On Friday, my friend and I took a couple of laps around Jamaica Pond. For the most part the path was clear. It was so warm out we just had to take a walk. There were many people on the path. They all had the same idea.

The pond was still a bit frozen and it was fun to see the geese walk on the ice. I am hoping spring is around the corner

My newest Etsy Listing. I love this wonderful treasury

The Kitchen Witch and...

A little fun in Jamaica Plain, Boston. I love the hat and apron the Kitchen Witch is wearing. The other day the snow was still pretty high. This bike looks a bit buried. I added a bit of retro to the shot.

The Lion Parade was really fun to photograph despite the chilly temperatures. I had meet the Boston Photo Mob there. My friends and I ended up splitting off and getting some lunch and taking some shots of Chinatown. More practice with my new camera! The last photo is sort of fun. Almond is taking another member of the group by surprise by his camera.

The Lions Dance II

As promised, more photos from the Lion Parade. I love the tails on these costumes. The are so cute how they wag. The last photo is if an offering at the restaurant we ate in. We were visited by many lions during lunch. It was a bit chilly and we dined with our coats on. It was fun seeing the Lions taking the offerings. My friend, Ken ended up with lettuce thrown over his back. That may be good luck.

The Lions Dance

On Sunday, I met the Boston Photo Mob, my friends Ken and Amy to photograph the Chinatown Lion Parade. I haven't taken photos of an event like this in some time. It was fun to follow the lions around and watch them dance. I just loved all the colors. the costumes, and the movement of the lions. There was eight sets of lions. They go from business to business accepting offerings of oranges and lettuce. The lions bring good luck and fortune.

More tomorrow...

I just received my new camera, a Nikon D7000, last week. I have been experimenting with the camera. Taking photos in my home of the mundane and this quick shot of my niece. It isn't perfect and the curtain is in the way but, I love the look on her face.

February Crafty Meet-up

The crafty meet-ups have been happening for just over a year now. I have enjoyed going to these meetings, talking about our lives and craft. The group has grown to a healthy size. I wanted to thank Mimi for starting this group. In the winter months, I love to order hot chocolate, Diesel Cafe serve a beautiful hot chocolate.

The second photo is Crystal making a wire crab. It will be fun to see the finished piece. I love that some of us knit and make things while we talk with each other.

I decided to poke around after the meeting and take a few shots. I have taken photos in Diesel Cafe before. I have never used my wide angle there. The cafe has a set of shelves with kooky things on the them like Spock and typewriters.

They also have photo booth, sadly it is not in working order. I love the photo on display of the outside of the booth, very funny. For a full shot of the booth and bike look here. I always think of the movie Amélie when I see a Photo Booth. It is hard not too!

Random, Boston

These are the last of the photos from my walk along the waterfront in Boston. I think it is great that the waterfront is so diverse and a can be a bit industrial at times. That makes for great photos, well at least for me.

What is your favorite place to photograph?
