Dedham Historical Tour

Sunday, I was lucky enough to stop by Dedham Day and take some photos but also, take the Dedham Historical Walking Tour. It was lead by Historian, Bob Hanson, who has a great insight on Dedham's history. It would be hard to choose my favorite part of the tour. Mr. Hanson had so many stories on some of the personalities and events that formed Dedham, as it is today. It was a definitely entertaining tour.

I was taken back in time walking by some of this very old buildings and homes. I have walked this area taking photos or just for a stroll more times than I can count, but now I know a bit of history behind it all.

The Dedham Historical tour self-guided tour is available at the Historical Society and on the Dedham Square Circle's website. The brochure was a collaboration between the Dedham Historical Society and Dedham Square Circle. I designed this booklet and took the cover photos. You can imagine, I was very excited to go on the tour.  A recent article on the work to have this booklet produced and the tour was published in the Dedham Transcript.

Dedham Day Fun

Yesterday, I took a trip down to Dedham Day. It is an annual celebration for the town. There are kiddie rides, fair food, and raffles. There was also, a cow or two that poop on a small piece of land, hopefully yours. You buy a deed for your tiny plot and hope the cow poops on it, then the cash prize is yours. Despite, the cloudy weather, everybody seemed to be having a great time. Although, I think this poor kid in the dunk tank was a bit chilly. He gave me a fun, thumbs up.

 I had shot photos of the fair last year, (photos here) and wanted to do a different take on the fair.

The Dots Have It, Jamaica Plain

This window display at Boomerangs in Jamaica Plain made me laugh. I couldn't figure out what they were doing or the theme of these windows but, I just giggled. Very fun!

Jamaica Plain Open Studios

Yesterday, We had a great time walking around visting artists and crafters at the JP Open studios. The JP Open studios is celebrating it's 17th anniversary. There is a wide variety of photography, painting, crafts, pottery, jewelry, etc. Something, for just about everyone. We stopped to visit several friends including, Lucie Wicker (photo above), Betsy Baker, and fellow Dedham resident, and photographer, Matt McKee. We didn't have time to visit all the studios but, we did walk around Elliot street area and the Brewery. The Brewery complex had over 30 artists in the parking lot and several studios in the building. Also, if like beer you take the Sam Adams Brewery tour or have a bite to eat at Bella Luna. We ended our JP open studios at Bella Luna. I had a very, yummy pizza.

I collected the business cards of several artists that I liked and hopefully will do a few profiles on this blog in the near future.

I had a little fun with macro lens and veggies I bought at the Dedham Farmer's Market. The top two are cauliflower and the bottom are fresh, New England corn. Always, yummy! I think the very bottom almost looks like a abstract painting

Cristina Hurley, Unique Jewelry Design

My friend and fellow Boston Handmader, Cristina Hurley, has taken the plunge and open a new store/studio in Canton Center. I took a ride over to see her shop on opening day. It is a really nice space with plenty of room for her studio. She was making her unique pieces in her apartment. It was a bit cramped for her and her family. This will give her more room to create her beautiful and handcrafted jewelry. Each piece is different and she has made many new pieces for her shop

Cristina hired me to redesign her logo. She had a hand drawn double h for the middle. She needed a clean up of the logo. She wanted to use the logo in a bigger format, such as signs and banners. I based my design on the art she provided me. She wanted something simple on a white background. After a few rounds of using different fonts we  came up with this design. I think the logo really stands and reflects her jewelry design.

These are some shots of her new studio work benches where she designs and fabricates her jewelry. She can now has plenty of room. I think it is great that when you visit her shop you may also get a chance to see her working

Taken in Bay Village, Boston. I love the little kitty. It was circling around hoping I would give him/her some attention. But, the kitty was behind the grate and the window.

On Thursday, I took a ride up to Marblehead, MA. I wanted to get more shots and wander around. The town is very beautiful and packed in with lovely, historic homes. I loved walking by the docks and photographing the boats in the harbor. More tomorrow...

Bancroft and friends, Marblehead, MA

I took a bit of a photo adventure in Marblehead, last week. I also, visited my friend, Brook Pickering. I wanted to take a look at her newly opened store, Bancroft and Friends. She now has her store stocked and running. It was tons of work for Brooke. She did a wonderful job. She is featuring some Boston Handmade members Amy of Bumble Belly Designs and Kiki of All the Numbers. I hope to have some photos in her shop soon.

Merry

I walked from Newbury street to South Station on Wednesday, afternoon. It was a beautiful day, not too hot. This merry-go-round at the Frog Pond in Boston Common caught my eye. I can't help but photograph them. The colors and funky animals attract me. I had a little filter fun with the top photo. It looks a bit surreal. Tomorrow, my Marblehead adventure.

Boston Handmade returns to SOWA

SoWa Open Market will be hosting special guests, Boston Handmade, at its weekly outdoor fair highlighting the talent of local artists and designers. 15 members of the artisan group Boston Handmade will be showing and selling handmade jewelry, clothing, accessories, ceramics, art, photography, handspun yarn, and more... I will be there along with my artisans friends.
